Aspen Medical has been contracted to provide quality comprehensive industrial hygiene services on behalf of our oil and gas customer, Shell Australia. We are seeking an Occupational Hygienist that will provide a range of industrial and occupational hygiene practice activities in support of the health services delivery requirements.
This is a fixed-term role from January 2022 until December 2022, commencing after credentialing and onboarding. Experience in the oil and gas industry is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be required to travel offshore on a regular basis.
The roles and responsibilities of this position include:
- developing, implementing, and reviewing risk assessment and management plans, consistent with the annual health and hygiene plan in accordance with contractual requirements
- providing specialist advice and support to key stakeholders on health and hygiene concerns. This may include investigation, new chemical approvals, hazard evaluation and control strategies
- implementing and maintaining occupational hygiene processes and procedures in line with regulatory and company requirements
- identifying and evaluating worker exposure to occupational hygiene health hazards as per site risk-based monitoring plan
- reviewing and updating of occupational hygiene programs/procedures on a periodic basis, and develop and implement new programs as required
- educating, communicating and engaging with HSSE, leaders and operational personnel on health hazard management; including performance standard reviews, findings, and recommendations identified from workplace studies
- managing and coordinating the maintenance and calibration of hygiene monitoring equipment
- participating in internal and external audits in compliance with regulations and company requirements
- inputting data for monthly reporting reporting activities in monthly reporting activities
- managing industrial hygiene records in accordance with company requirements
- displaying behaviours consistent with Aspen Medical and Shell Corporate Values and Code of Conduct.

What you will bring
- Role ideally suited to individuals with a minimum of (10) years’ experience with deep exposure to Occupational Hygiene and Health.

The opportunity

Position 2 - Occupational Hygienist
The opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Hygienist to join Sydney Metro’s Health & Safety branch. This role will see you supporting an established occupational health and hygiene team in implementing management systems such as performance standards, associated guidance and instruments to govern the occupational health performance of our Project delivery partners. The Occupational Hygienist will provide expert advice to business customers across the organisation to ensure occupational health risks are systematically managed and variation in project performance deliverables are mitigated.

The Role
The Occupational Diseases and Hygiene Policy Section is a dynamic team responsible for the development of national policy relating to occupational diseases and occupational hygiene, including:

Occupational infectious diseases, including COVID-19
-
Occupational respiratory diseases, including silicosis and asbestosis, and

Physical hazards such as noise and vibration.
It is an exciting time to join our team, with three priority areas of work being progressed in 2021-22:

Implementation of the occupational lung diseases workplan, in particular managing regulatory reforms to reduce workplace exposure to respirable crystalline silica.

Development of national policy guidance on WHS risks due to COVID-19.

Implementation of the recommendations of the 2018 Review of the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws related to asbestos.
Due to the importance of this work to our members and Ministers, we are seeking a high performing candidate at the APS 6 level. We are looking for an enthusiastic team player who not only has the requisite technical experience but also strong communication and policy development skills. Experience in project management is also highly desirable, but professional development in this area will be offered for the right candidate.
The key duties of the Policy Officer role include:

Contribute to the review of national COVID-19 guidance materials.

Contribute to a program of regulatory reforms to reduce workplace exposure to occupational respiratory hazards and the incidence of occupational respiratory diseases, such as silicosis and silica associated diseases.

Support the Agency’s senior executive and executive level staff by developing well-researched policy and advice to achieve the Agency’s strategic objectives related to occupational diseases and occupational hygiene.

Contribute to the maintenance of the national work health and safety (WHS) legislation.

Analyse complex issues and draft high-quality documents including briefs, policy papers, model Codes of Practice and guidance material.

The Occupational Health and Hygiene Advisor will work with the Operational and Health, Safety and Environment Team to implement the Health Strategy. Successful implementation of the Health Strategy is essential to ensure exposure to chemical, physical and biological hazards are appropriately monitored and controlled.
Role responsibilities:
- Assisting in the development and delivery of Occupational Health and Hygiene programs and strategies.
- Conducting Occupational Hygiene Surveys at operational facilities.
- Ensuring all health surveillance is carried out.
- Ensuring Occupational Health and Hygiene information is electronically stored and maintained.
- Assisting in the implementation and maintenance of the OH data management systems.
- Preparing and reviewing internal reports and procedures.

- Manage the regulatory requirement for documented notification to SafeWork relating to permanent and temporary changes of site stock holdings of Dangerous Goods quantities.
- Coordinate and execute quantitative respirator fit testing of both disposable and reusable respirators.
You will demonstrate the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Hygiene or related Health discipline.
- Experience in physically conducting monitoring for biological, physical and chemical contaminants.
- Experience in developing health surveillance programs.
- Experience with identifying and/or handling Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Materials.
- Experience in conducting audits, investigations, risk assessments and inspections.
- Understanding of relevant chemical related regulations; Globally Harmonised System (GHS) and Australian Dangerous Goods Code (ADGC).
- Understanding of legislative requirements relating to health surveillance and occupational hygiene.
The successful candidate will demonstrate practical, hands on experience combined with a high level of self-discipline and commitment to excellence.
